Raised by Benedictine nuns in Tulsa, OK, Raphael learned classical music and Gregorian chants during his solitary childhood. From the age of 13, he felt a strong connection to baroque music, particularly the works of Antonio Vivaldi, the 18th-century violinist and composer who was himself a Catholic monk. In reaction to his strict upbringing, however, Raphael plunged wholeheartedly into the late-'60s San Francisco scene. Yet even as he explored rock & roll and tribal music, he never lost his love of his classical roots and occasionally admitted to feeling like a reincarnation of Vivaldi. After a period playing gypsy violin on the streets of the city, dressed like a European count, Raphael completed piano and composition studies at the San Francisco Conservatory. A 12-year stint as staff musician at the Esalen Institute at Big Sur helped him consolidate his ideas on the role of music in healing and relaxation. His two resonant albums of neo-romantic music make perfect sense considering his background. Sweeping grand piano, ethereal violin solos, sparkling synthesizer textures, and floating chorals sound like Rachmaninoff and Paganini reeling through space with a chorus of liberated nuns (conducted from the great beyond, no doubt, by Vivaldi himself).
Raphael - Music to Disappear In (1988)
Цитата:
Raphael's extremely popular Music to Disappear In introduced his signature blend of romantic piano, angelic vocals and synths and exotic world music. The album's first four pieces focus on the ethereal side of his music: "Disappearing Into You" features piano, strings, and a soft, mixed chorus, while the choir and synthesizers of "In Paradiso" rework Faure's "In Paradisum" for the 21st century. Music to Disappear In's last four pieces become more earthy and sensuous, incorporating hand drums, bamboo flutes, harps and gypsy violins into trance dances like "Serpent." Sublime romance and earthy rhythms make the album's eight compositions truly unique. ~ All Music Guide

Just as passionate as its predecessor, Music to Disappear in II expands Raphael's vision with increased musical refinement and production skills. Gypsy violin, subtle but compelling percussion, atmospheric synths and female vocals surround Raphael's sweeping grand piano with deep emotion. "River Seeks the Deep," "Surrender" and "Healing Dance" meld the gentle, passionate and exotic into a sensuous blend, while the last three tracks -- "Laxshimi," "Tantra" and "Heaven" -- use congas, bells, violin solos and vocals by guest artist Sophia to reach an ecstatic climax. The transcultural trance-dances of Music to Disappear in II exemplify Raphael's creative spirit. ~ All Music Guide
Like An Endless River, is a another release in the Oceanic Tantra series. It allows ""a way to explore sexuality through rituals, music, trance dance, theater, and individual creative expression. . .""
Tracks are lovingly to the point: the opener, ""Invocation,"" sets a respectful tone in a calling of the Mother Goddess with chants, drums, and ancient African instruments. ""Intimacy"" and ""Divine Passion"" are next, using violin, flute, guitar, and ultimately the tabla tarong.
""Opening of the Heart"" is the soundtrack for ""bringing sexual energy to the heart,"" with harp and drums led by NYC ""urban shaman"" vocalist Serpentine. ""Liberation"" and the title track utilize more of the tabla tarong, harp, and flutes, as well as the Native American drum. ""The Temple"" and ""From Deep Within"" round out the recording, grounding the listener and enabling him or her to muse over the messages and impressions imparted in the previous tracks. Drummers from Gabrielle Roth's group, the Mirrors, are guests. Tantra is called the ""path of the heart,"" and Like An Endless River represents some of the infinite energy that can be experienced and replenished on that journey. ~ Stacey Meyn

Raphael's prior album Music to Disappear In II is a mellow, deeply ambient piece of work that manages to mesmerize and stimulate at the same time, wonderful stuff for meditation. Angels of the Deep follows the pattern too, this time taking the deep focus and painting in both an oceanic theme and an angelic theme, which means not only the slow, drifting musical pulse with the deep environment to it, but also subtly-incorporated whale sounds. It's a wonderful piece of work, sleepily sensuous, an album for lying down with the lights out and the brain glowing with light. The pieces themselves are generally long and winding, never jarring in entrance or exit, making this delightfully organic. Put it on and think of the stars over ocean and prepare to be carried off. ~ All Music Guide
Intimacy: Music for Love continues Raphael's passionate, creative musical journey. This time his piano skills are featured more prominently in his compositions than on other releases, creating a fittingly intimate mood. Intimacy's seven works span the range of sensual expression, from the contemplative ("Going Deeper") to the cathartic ("Forgiveness"). Transcendental and haunting, Intimacy is truly a labor of love. ~ All Music Guide
